Abstract

Over the last 10 years, there has been an enormous amount of anecdotal information from participants and their families regarding the Empire Youth Arts (EYA) initiatives. Informally, these programs seem to offer unprecedented training and insights into the creative potential of young people in regional Queensland, and yet, there is no substantive, research-based evidence to demonstrate the actual efficacy and contribution that these initiatives provide for the community. This Report, although not exhaustive, provides significant insight and validation of the impact of EYA initiatives on the lives of emerging young theatre artists.

Discussions regarding this research project began in August 2019 between Ari Palani, Jeanette Wedmaier, and Associate Professor Janet McDonald as their hunches regarding what the EYA was producing in the youth theatre/community development space was potentially remarkable as a model for regional arts development and execution. These overall research questions were created to guide the critical evaluation are thus:

• What are the collective memories and experiences of the EYA program?
• How have these influenced student/graduate/stakeholder relations with the arts in regions?
• How might programs like EYA provide a model for cultural capacity building outside metropolitan areas?
