Biography

Taryn Axelsen is a Lecturer in Statistics with the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Computing department at the University of Southern Queensland, Springfield. She has been teaching first, second- and third-year courses in statistics for nearly 20 years and maintains strong links with schools including the Deputy Chair of the ATAR Committee and ATAR Ratification committees.

Taryn believes her role as statistics educator is about creating appropriate teaching and learning experiences for students to incorporate a variety of factors to make statistics more appealing and ultimately hope that students leave university liking statistics. In 2023 Taryn was awarded a HEA Fellowship, showing her continued commitment to increasing statistical education at UniSQ.

In 2022, Taryn (in collaboration with Associate Professor Rachel King) was awarded the overall UniSQ Excellence Award for University Teaching for developing an innovative competencies curriculum and assessment framework to increase statistical confidence in first-year students and provide cohesive threshold knowledge in introductory statistics.

She has also been working as a statistical consultant for the UniSQ Statistical Consulting Unit for 10 years, providing a wide range of statistical support to a variety of different HDR students and staff across different field throughout the university. Her main research interest is in statistical education, endeavouring to improve the overall learning experience for statistical students at a tertiary level. Other research areas include self-theories, overcoming statistics anxiety, advancements in technology to enhance the teaching of university statistics and statistical enrichment for school aged students.
