Abstract

This presentation was originally in Chinese.
The following is only a brief description.
From metazoan to mammals, the number of protein coding genes and functional scope are broadly similar, about two million, and the functions of these genes encoding proteins in metazoan are most similar to human.
For example: Transparent worm (Caenorhabditis elegans) has only about 1 thousand cells with very few muscle and nerve cells. While in human body there are about 30 to 100 trillion cells. Just imagine how the facial muscles work to express human emotions, we can imagine how complex are the structure and function of the human body. This similarity in genomic components between metazoan and mammals indicates that the most basic element of animals had been established millions of years ago. Since the protein coding genes in C. elegans and human scale have no significant difference we can believe that the regulatory mechanisms of genomic information are embedded in the non-coding sequence. In this presentation, I talked about the history of people's understanding of the significance of non-coding sequences, and the current hypothesis about the possible regulatory mechanisms of non-coding sequences.
