Abstract | This paper investigates numerically the stability of trapdoor problem that is similar to a 2D sinkhole stability analysis. The shear strength reduction technique in the finite difference element software FLAC is used to determine factors of safety. The FLAC results are then verified by comparing with rigorous upper and lower bound limit analysis results using OPTUM G2. Numerical results presented are for various depth ratios in dimensionless forms to establish design charts like in Taylor’s slope stability chart. Examples are provided to demonstrate the use of the design chart and table. |
