Abstract | [Abstract]: The problem of a footing on slope is encountered regularly in engineering practice, with some noteworthy examples being bridge abutments and basement excavations. This paper demonstrates that computer programs, such as FLAC, can be used to analyse the problem efficiently and without compromising accuracy. FLAC results of a smooth footing located near a vertical slope are compared with rigorous Upper and Lower Bound solutions. Design charts are presented to investigate the change in bearing capacity of an existing foundation due to slope excavation and to demonstrate the manner in which the results can aid design. |
