Abstract | Statistics on sharps injuries are staggering. In 2005, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that worldwide more than three million health care workers experienced sharps injuries annually and those exposures resulted in over 70,000 infections with blood-borne pathogens, such as Hepatitis C (HepC), Hepatitis B (HepB) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). While the physical impact of sharps injuries is well reported in the literature, the psychological impact is often overlooked. People exposed to contaminated sharps experience anxiety, stress and symptoms of depression. |
