Abstract | Health care–associated infections (HAIs) are one of the most common and preventable patient safety issues, affecting millions of patients worldwide, and surgical site infection accounts for almost a quarter of HAIs in developed countries. In addition to the increased burden of cost to the patient and the health service, HAIs affect postoperative morbidity and mortality rates. The risk of unintended poor surgical outcomes is increased when evidence based guidelines for prevention of surgical site infection are breached, particularly by omission of therapies recommended in the guidelines. Poor surgical outcomes subsequently contribute to preventable harm, suboptimal patient outcomes or experiences and resource waste. Adopting practices that prevent and control HAIs is one of the most important measures in reducing postoperative morbidity and mortality. Nurses play an important role in infection prevention and control because they undertake a large proportion of the treatment and care of perioperative patients, including surgical site preparation. |
