Abstract | Posthumous organ procurement is a critical procedure in which perioperative nurses contribute significantly to the conduct of the procedure and viability of organs and tissues for later transplant. The rate of organ donation has increased over 70 per cent in recent years', which saw, in 2016, a record 1440 Australians receiving transplants as a result of 503 deceased organ donors2. However the rate of donation in Australia is still relatively low compared to other nations’, and occurs so sporadically in most operating rooms that it is difficult to acquire expertise as a perioperative nurse. In most cases, perioperative nurses are not members of the retrieval teams who visit from transplant centres and this results in perioperative nurses from donor hospitals assisting with these procedures. As such, it is likely that individual perioperative nursing expertise in relation to organ procurement will vary, giving rise to challenges. For the individual perioperative nurse, this may include participating in an unfamiliar, highstakes procedure and working within unfamiliar multidisciplinary teams. Challenges for managers can include ensuring an appropriate skill m'x of the nursing team. Other considerations include the emotional support needs, specific to posthumous organ procurement; ethical concerns and conscientious objections; and access to relevant education. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of how the 'Perioperative nursing management of posthumous organ procurement’ guideline was proposed and developed. |
