Abstract | This chapter explores changing visitor experiences of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia within the context of the notions of place and space. It is shown that early visitors to the reef gained a fully embodied experience of the particular locations they visited. They were consciously embodied and oriented, with their own sense of history and time and space. Their encounters produced sensory knowledge that was particular to the locations they visited and shared and narrated with fellow travellers. As such, their experiences can be understood as contributing to a knowledge of place. This kind of knowledge was significantly diminished as the 20th century progressed. Changes to facilities, transport, technology, access and ideology significantly altered the way in which tourists engaged with environments of the Great Barrier Reef region during the 20th century. In particular, advances in diving and photographic equipment have resulted in an emphasis on the visual aspects of consumption of the reef. |
