Abstract | This paper presents and describes a Manifesto for Queer Heritage Practice 1.0 and discusses the collaborative work undertaken to produce it. The intent of the Manifesto is to support ICOMOS, and more broadly heritage work, to recognise and engage with Queer/LGBTQIA+ heritage as an important field of conservation; and to demand actions to achieve this outcome. The Queer Manifesto recognises that the heritage of diverse sexual and gender identities has complexities that can require specialist methodologies for identifying, documenting, and managing significant-as well as everyday-places, collections, and practices. The Manifesto is deliberately short and comprises three parts: a preamble that recognises and situates queer heritage; a forward-looking declaration that asserts queer heritage as integral to heritage theory and practice; and a call for action. The paper considers, contextualises, and discusses the points made under the three parts of the document. In doing so, we draw on relevant literature, and especially the other papers-as well as the book reviews-presented in this volume. We recognise, because of who we are, the Manifesto is incomplete to some extent, and can be revised in the future as additional, more diverse voices are included. |
