Abstract | The late 20th and early 21st centuries have seen a turn in heritage studies that seeks to consider the social, emotional, and political nature of heritage. The predominance of visual appreciation is perhaps no more apparent than in the case of heritage landscapes which according to established definitions include elements of both nature and culture. This chapter explores how embodied experiences, movement, and shared narratives are constitutive of landscapes and advocates for incorporating these approaches in the identification, management, and interpretation of heritage landscapes. Contestation of historic and scientific heritage values have in large part questioned the role of the expert, and advocated for community-led practices of heritage identification and management. Heritage practitioners should therefore be judicious in how visual aesthetics are used in assessments and conservation decisions. Newer technologies are capable of sophisticated, multi-sensual recording and can facilitate co-production of heritage records. |
