Abstract

David Thompson's book, 'The Returned' explores the motivation and experience of young Muslim men and women who left France to live and fight in the Syrian civil war. For some this was due to push factors that led them to reject life in the West, whereas for others the idea of a heroic lifestyle, a personal search for identity or commitment to a meaningful cause (jihad) were primary motivators.
