Abstract | Despite the developments in this era of technological change, language remains a critical component of wartime cross-cultural experience. Contemporary military forces need to employ specialist cultural advisers in war zones, mirroring the example set by the Dutch in Afghanistan. Past strategies of communication and language teaching has informed contemporary practice, and the military interpreter needs to work seamlessly in a variety of challenging environments. As more multinational and coalition deployments take place, ever more language and cultural specialists will be needed. However, research on the experiences of contemporary and future conflicts will be restricted as the relative openness of the immediate post-war era is challenged by the emergence of increasingly authoritarian cultures around the globe. |
