Abstract | This chapter introduces the challenges facing those who research the place of languages in wartime. It surveys the life experiences of five military interpreters from Britain, Germany, Australia and the United States from the First World War to the Iraq war, evaluating their motivation for becoming interpreters and their ability to undertake cross-cultural communication during conflict. This is followed by an evaluation of the historical and contemporary perspectives of interpreting and communication in war; including cross-cultural communication, strategies of communication and language teaching, and the lived experience of interpreters in wartime and after. |
