Abstract | The presumption that Queensland has an inherently conservative popular culture was promulgated on social media through the # Quexit phenomena following the 2019 Australian election, with the associated false presumption that Queensland was responsible for the election result. These two books examine right wing populism in Australia and the rise of Pauline Hanson's One Nation party. My review demonstrates that although the diversities of regionalism and the Queensland sense of difference outlined in the work of novelist Thea Astley certainly have shaped Queensland culture, populism is a far more complex political phenomenon that deserves serious analysis. This is an Australia-wide phenomenon and purportedly progressive states such as New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania have also contributed to populist and right wing conservative trends in Australian politics, making Queensland less unique than often supposed. |
