Abstract | Many musicians and music educators wish to work in music on prescription programs or are already doing so, but some feel underprepared for working in health and social care settings. On the other side, many health professionals wish to invite musicians to work within their services or want to refer patients to music programs in the community as part of their discharge planning or ongoing health care. Unfortunately, due to the arts, health, and community sectors operating largely independently, music on prescription services have not been easy to establish and sustain. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to bring together our combined expertise in music performance and education, medicine, clinical psychology, and the arts in health, to address this topic. The paper has two main aims. The first is to provide guidance for musicians about how to ‘pivot’ from music performance and education to music on prescription. Here, we compare the skills, strategies and professional identity that are salient in music performance, music education, and music on prescription roles. The second aim is to identify tools and resources that might help health professionals to understand and refer patients to music on prescription programs. There are growing opportunities globally for musicians and health professionals to partner to develop music on prescription programs. |
