Abstract

This chapter explores the phenomenon of online student engagement within the context of higher education. The chapter starts by scoping the scene and examining the increasing appetite to study online, as well as student motivations for doing so, before discussing the importance of engaging students online. Attention is then directed to understandings and interpretations of online student engagement. Details related to ways in which to identify online student engagement are introduced, including reference to the elements and indicators outlined in the Online Engagement Framework for Higher Education developed by Redmond et al. (2018). The chapter concludes by offering a range of tips for engaging students online, including those who have not engaged, have disengaged, or whose engagement is low.
