Biography
Professor Mushtaq holds a Ph.D. in natural resource economics from the University of the Philippines and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines. He is an accomplished scientist with extensive senior management experience in integrated climate and finance (insurance) risk management, water resources management, regional economic analysis, resilience, and adaptation to climate, water, and agricultural policy development.
Professor Mushtaq has an impressive 28 years of experience in research and management across multiple countries, such as Australia, China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Lao PDR, Indonesia, India, Papua New Guinea, and Pakistan. He began his professional journey as an Economist for a World Bank-funded project in Pakistan in 1996. Throughout his career, he has held various positions at esteemed institutions like the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), the Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), and Charles Sturt University (CSU). Currently, he is a Professor and Deputy Director at the Centre for Applied Climate Sciences (CACS), University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ) since Jan 2019.
Professor Mushtaq's influence in the field is further underscored by his extensive publication record. He is widely published in climate risk management, economics and finance, and water resource management, with over 150 scientific works, including book chapters, journal articles, conference papers, and technical reports. His contributions have been recognized with several prestigious awards, such as the Eureka Prize in 2007 as part of the Land & Water Australia team, the CSIRO Chairman's Award in 2007, the Wiley Best Publication Award, the National Water Commission (NWC) Fellowship, IRRI fellowship, USQ best awards, and UniSQ QI-publications awards.
