Abstract

Knowing how to heighten engagement and then empower our students to be active, productive citizens has provided us with a stimulus to embark on a journey to explore where theory meets practice in our middle school setting. In the 21st century, being 'literate' forms the foundation for all other learning, but is discipline-specific and requires
explicit teaching for students to demonstrate competency.
Through action research, we explored pedagogy to identify how literacy teaching practices are embedded in planning, in order to cater for the specific needs of all students. The focus of this study was grounded upon student motivation—extrinsically and intrinsically—as we examined the effectiveness of learning Studies of Society & Environment, through explicitly planning and teaching the literacy inherent. Applying a Motivational Pedagogy framework for the research project successfully focused the learner’s role, as a listener, speaker, writer and reader. Developing deeper understanding of the SOSE-specific literacy skills provided the student cohorts with the tools to demonstrate metacognition. Teaching these students explicitly to be text analysts linked their learning to real life, engaging them in the practicalities of literacy as a social practice.
