Abstract | Dust generation from trafficking unpaved roads is a major concern in the coal seam gas (CSG) industry, especially in areas where roads run through or border private property, and rural areas where arterial routes are often unpaved. Dust particulate can reduce visibility, deteriorate air quality, cause nuisance to private residents (e.g. settled dust on rooves contaminating tank water) and change soil production and hydraulic properties via pore blockage. To address such safety, social and environmental concerns, a method to abate dust through a change in particulate physical properties is normally sought. Water is the most common method of suppressing dust (Gebhardt et al. 1999). As the Australian CSG industry produces up to 100 GL/yr, with a potential of 280 GL/yr, of by-product water (Centre for Water in the Minerals Industry 2008), there could be both a beneficial use for the water by-product as well as a readily available solution to dust suppression. However, the quality of the water requires consideration. |
