Abstract

Four components of black tea extract (tannic acid, caffeine, theophylline and theobromine) exhibited antileishmanial activity against L. donovani, L. tropica and L. major, in both promastigote and axenic amastigote stages. All components showed antileishmanial activity against the three species. The concentration used ranged between (0.623-3) mg/ml. It was found that tannic acid had the greater effect on Leishmania species than other components, with ED50 range between (0.025-0.05) mg/ml after three days of exposure. Caffeine and theophylline showed a potent activity against the three species of Leishmania, with ED50 range between (0.035-1) mg/ml and (0.5-1) mg/ml respectively. In contrast the ED50 for theobromine ranged between (0.72-3) mg\ml. These results suggest further assessment of the four components of tea extract in infected laboratory animals and in humans against Leishmania infections.
