Abstract | Eleven Aeromonas isolates were examined for their biotypes, antibiogram and RAPD fingerprints. The biochemical analysis revealed three species (Aeromonas caviae, Aeromonas hydrophila, Aeromonas sobria). While antibiogram analysis gave rise to six patterns of resistance. Random amplified polymorphic DNA-polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR) was used to differentiate the genus Aeromonas at the genomospecies level. Of the (24) primers evaluated, (11) produced profiles, which contain multiple, bands capable of differentiating the genomospecies. In most cases, each isolate gave a unique fingerprint, illustrating genetic heterogeneity at the genomospecies level. However, some homogeneity in fragment sizes was seen among isolates within a genomospecies, which was not apparent in strains from different species, RAPD-PCR with primers OPN-7 and OPN-13 revealed eight patterns. Whereas primer OPN-9 yielded only three patterns. These results showed that RAPD-PCR has the potential to differentiate Aeromonas. RAPD analysis can be used in epidemiological studies for the identification and characterization of Aeromonas. |
