Abstract | Sunlight is a major contributor to an individual’s vitamin D status. Determinants of sun exposure have been used in conjunction with dietary data to study the effect of sunlight on bone health of elderly populations. In order to assess the impact of sun exposure on vitamin D status or bone mass of children, a sun-exposure questionnaire must be devised for children and tested. Because sun exposure is not equivalent over the course of a day, a factor that affects cutaneous previtamin D3synthesis, the questionnaire should account for the varying strengths of ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation throughout a day. This study attempts to improve upon previous methods of quantifying sun exposure and to further investigate in vitro synthesis of previtamin D3at varying UVB levels. |
