Abstract | Excessive and repeated exposures to solar ultraviolet radiation (UV) have been linked to the induction of skin cancers, DNA damage, immune suppression and sun related eye disorders (Longstreth et al, 1995). The UVB wavelengths (280-320 nm) have a higher relative effectiveness for producing erythema compared to the UVA wavelengths (320-400 nm) (CIE, 1987). On the positive side, exposures to certain terrestrial UV wavelengths (290-330 nm) are required for the initiation of the production of vitamin D (CIE, 2006). There is a fine balance between the small amounts of UV exposure required to initiate vitamin D production and the damaging effects of UV exposures beyond this amount. This requires an optimization of the solar UV exposures to humans in different environments. To optimize solar UV exposures, an understanding of the complexities influencing the solar UV environment must be obtained. This chapter discusses the influences on the UV due to cloud, shade, water and reflective materials and also the development of new methods to provide the means to understand the influencing factors on the UV in these environments. |
