Join us for a free, thought-provoking colloquium on widening participation and equity in higher education. Featuring a keynote address by Professor Andrew Harvey, a leading national voice in equity policy and research; a panel discussion with prominent experts; the launch of the Journal of Pathways Education and Research; plus presentations from researchers and practitioners across the sector.

Abstract

This presentation will provide an overview the Welcome Academy initiative at UniSQ, a research-driven response to the educational and employment disparities experienced by refugee students in Toowoomba, Australia. Employing a human-centred design thinking framework, the project is currently progressing through a multi-phase, mixed-methods approach to develop a replicable educational model suitable for higher education institutions within liberal democracies.
Based on the principles of engaged scholarship, the objectives of the Welcome Academy are fourfold: (1) to enhance educational access and success through tailored programs that support language acquisition, foundational skills, and discipline-specific mentorship; (2) to foster community engagement by building strategic partnerships with schools, government agencies, NGOs, businesses and community groups,(3) to improve employment access through targeted initiatives including scholarships, mentorship, and industry connections; and (4) Undertake research focused on the educational and employment challenges and opportunities relevant to refugee populations.
