Abstract | Discursive psychology focuses upon how representationsare constructed within and constitutive of the socialpractices that are found in language. Gender is conceptu-alised as a multifaceted, multidimensional, multifactorial, dynamic, and variable concept that is negotiated within thelocal interactive context where culture, history, and socialcontexts are reflected within discursive practices. Accord-ingly we make sense of ourselves as women and men withinsocial interactions through the cultural and personalresources that are made available to us in our discourse.Interview data from 2 male coaches is presented thatexplores how gender identity is enacted and negotiated ineveryday talk using a discursive analysis. Interest centres onthe interpretative repertoires (IRs) and reflexive positions(RPs) that each participant uses to prescribe themselves asmen. Analysis suggests that participants used gender relatedIRs to position themselves as particular types of men (RPs)that was specific to the social, historical, cultural, and localinteractional context. Discussion centres on the ideologicalfunction of such talk and how gender may need to be re-conceptualised in sport and exercise psychology withconsideration of such discursive findings. |
