Abstract | Agricultural Transformation Action Plan (ATAP) was launched in 2012 by Nigerian Federal Government to make agriculture beneficial to all citizens. The socioeconomic reason was for rural farmers to develop various value chains in key crops such as root and tuber (R&T) crops; and Nigeria to reduce importation of finished products. This study was an inductive research to determine if root and tuber crops’ value chains can be further improved. Literatures from peer-reviewed journals and governmental documents were reviewed. Inductive findings revealed that agriculture was the main contributor to the GDP as at independence, contributing up to 60% but declined in the late 1970’s due to the discovery of oil in large quantity resulting in the neglect of the agricultural sector. The recent revitalization of agricultural sector by the Federal Government is gradually bringing back the lost glory in agriculture. However, the medical nutrition values has yet to be appreciated. Nigeria consumes and imports significant amount of grains, which gives >200% calorie benefit than R&T crops. In order for farmers to reap the benefits of value chain and product diversification, the contribution of medical nutrition to the value chain of R&T crops need to be investigated. |
