Abstract | Aim: This article provides a commentary on the implementation of the Multi Purpose Service (MPS) healthcare program and the underlying principles that govern the administration of MPS within the Australian public health system. Background: Existing funding models for acute care services do not apply to MPS, which increases the pressure on small rural areas with decreasing populations to maintain health care services. Evaluation: A database search yielded 147 articles and 23 were identified as being relevant to the topic. Key Issues: Key issues were identified from the evaluation of the literature and included: poor health in rural communities; the need for collaboration between governments; unique design of an MPS; and the need to consider community and staff perspectives. Conclusions: In the absence of any other sustainable model of health care delivery being developed or implemented within Australian rural and regional areas, the MPS model of care is the most practical use of financial and human resources to provide healthcare services for these small communities. |
