Abstract

Aim: To understand why there is an absence of true representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and knowledge in nursing and midwifery. In this presentation we will outline how the project team members are employing arts-based research methodologies that are consistent with an Indigenous research paradigm.
Method: Co-creation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nurse and midwifery theory and principles for practice through the use of photovoice.
Results: The development a shared understanding allows for diverse histories, places, perspectives, and experiences. Using photovoice allows researchers to understand how the developed theory and practice can be implemented in nurse and midwifery education (inclusive of clinical settings) in regional and urban areas.
Intended outcome: To provide improved cultural safety in nursing and midwifery, greater cultural safety for health consumers and; stronger recruitment and retention of Indigenous nurses and midwives. We share how Photo-Yarning and documentary filmmaking research methods are being applied to engage a diverse range of knowledge holders in leading the development of theory and practice.
