Abstract | Methane yields from waste activated sludge is reported to be in the range 0.116 – 0.318 L CH4/g VS degraded (Kim et al., 2003, Sosnowski et al., 2008). Methane potential from Ulu Pandan has been reported to be 0.292 L CH4/g VS fed (Trzcinski et al., 2013), but there is no data about the anaerobic biodegradability of the enhanced primary sludge that will be produced in PUB plants (Ulu Pandan and Jurong) in Singapore. The enhanced primary treatment or biosorption is expected to produce a new type of sludge with cells accumulating carbon as storage materials and also carbon entrapped in the extra-cellular matrix. Because of this biosorption it is expected to reduce considerably the production of conventional activated sludge in the subsequent step. In order to validate this process it is necessary to determine how much methane can be produce from this new type of sludge. Because of the carbon storage of the cell or biosorption it is expected that the methane yield will be higher than a conventional activated sludge. |
