Abstract | This is the fifth report (date of writing: 12th Aug 2014) in this two-year project (starting date: 12th August 2013). So far, we have received 21 sludge samples from the clarifier placed after the biosorption step (referred to as BPT or Biosorption Tank). One sample could not be taken on 22 May 2014 due to a pump failure on the site. We have also received 22 sludge samples from the MBR tank. TS, VS, TSS and VSS of these sludges were analyzed and the results were updated in the figures below. Biodegradability tests and calorific value analyses were also carried out. The calorific value of the samples after 9th June could not be analyzed due to a pump breakdown in our laboratory which prevented us to freeze dry our samples prior to calorific value analysis. The pump is currently under repair by the supplier and the analysis will resume once the pump is repaired. Interestingly, the calorific values of the BPT samples were in the range 18,000-21,000 J/g which was higher than that of the MBR samples (16,000-18,500 J/g). This correlated well with the higher biodegradability that we observed in the BPT samples compared to the MBR samples. After biodegradability tests, the centrate was analyzed for SCOD, TN, NH3-N, TP and PO4-P. SCOD is generally lower than 200 mg/L. TN and NH3-N were always in the range 400-600 mg/L whereas TP and PO4-P were in the range 80-200 mg/L. There was no difference between the centrates from the clarifier and from the MBR sludges after anaerobic digestion tests. |
