Abstract

Technology continues to develop at a rapid pace, requiring classroom teachers who are knowledgeable about teaching literacy through digital and multimodal means. However, pre-service teachers exhibit a wide range of skills with technology, and they are often learning how to teach language and literacy alongside developing mastery of various digital technologies. This presentation explains the terminal cycle of an open education action research project where postgraduate students studying education planned and implemented the co-construction of a multimodal text with a young child.

A pre-service teacher will give a first-hand account of her teaching design for the co-construction, and the learning that she and her child collaborator experienced. The presentation will showcase her work and others who published the student-authored open text titled Co-creating multimodal texts with young children (University of Southern Queensland, 2023). Using a ‘Learning by Design’ lens (Cope & Kalantzis, 2015), we present an analysis of how pre-service teachers can ‘do to know’ (learn) about multiliteracies and teaching in the digital age. We further discuss implications for initial teacher education and ongoing teacher professional development.
