Abstract

The concept of organizational 'coherence' is certainly not new, as the 1946 date for our opening quote from renowned theorist Peter Drucker indicates. Nor is it new to think of a school as a piece of music-images of in-tune schools and out-of-tune schools are easy enough to conjure up. What is new is the understanding that, without a process in place to ensure a high level of 'coherence' between key organizational factors, school leaders cannot easily proceed to create the fundamental conditions for sustainable school success. What are the key factors? And what are the implications for school leaders? These questions provide the impetus for this chapter on the second C-B dynamic.
