Abstract | The impact of religion on tensions within the Queensland Labor Party at the time of the 1957 split has been documented in scholarly literature, but its implications have not been fully discussed. This paper interprets the electoral fortunes of successive leaders of the Labor Party, John Duggan and Leslie Wood, and in doing so will make a case study of the impact of sectarianism in regional Queensland, and treats Toowoomba as a particular point of reference. This paper reconstructs the role which the provincial Catholic episcopate played in seeking to promote so-called ‘Groupers’ within the Labor movement and in punishing co-religionists within the Australian Labor Party who did not join the Queensland (later Democratic) Labor Party. |
