Abstract | The lost continent of British cinema, which is Julian Petley’s conceptualization of a body of commercially and publicly popular films that are nonetheless on the fringes of critical and academic respectability, is now a familiar part of film studies (1986). Not all the films found in this lost continent, nor all the themes and angles they cover, have received attention and one hitherto unexplored angle is commentary on the changing profile of the nursing profession accessed via popular culture. The ‘lost continent’ applies particularly to cinema, but other depictions of nursing in popular television equally merit analysis and will provide the source base for this chapter. |
