Abstract | The Queensland Farmers Federation along with research partners, UniSQ and commercial partners CelsiusPro and WTW have been investigating the use of parametric (that is, insurance that pays a claim upon the realisation of a specified trigger) insurance as a tool for managing income volatility for agricultural businesses as a result of natural hazards. The research undertaken in field trials and crop simulations investigates ways parametric insurance can improve or smooth income volatility. The research indicates that in a simulated environment, farmers could adopt strategies such as planting date adjustment to achieve higher yields if they have access to insurance to cover the risks associated with such adaptations. This research contributes to the long term viability of agricultural businesses and their communities as an evidence based preparatory solution to natural hazard related fluctuations farm income. This research is funded by the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund. |
