Biography
Dr Thong Nguyen-Huy has significant experience in teaching, research and student supervision at all levels. His research interests include agricultural climate risk modelling, climate finance, natural disasters, impacts of climate and weather extremes. He possesses expertise in computational statistics & data sciences, big data analytics, and GIS & remote sensing. He received the Climate Risk Research Award (top 10 globally) from the Allianz, Award for Excellence in Doctoral Research, Unit Specific Publication Excellence Award, Postgraduate Research Scholarship, and Graduate Coursework Prize from UniSQ. His research works were funded by the Australian government, industries, and international organisations. He is one of the Principal developers for the Australian Combined Drought Indicator (CDI) used informs official Queensland drought declarations. More recently, he was an Invited Speaker at the 4th International Conference of Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture in the Tropics 2023 (Indonesia). He is currently leading of an international project ($145K) funded by the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) through the Collaborative Regional Research Programme (CRRP). This project seeks to develop a new integrated physical-statistical-financial approach for disaster risk reduction to address climate change challenges effectively and adaptively, focusing on the Lower Mekong River Basin (LMRB), involving collaboration with partners in Vietnam, Thailand, Lao PDR and Cambodia.
