Abstract | [Introduction]: Knowledge Management (KM) is a contemporary management technique that is aimed at solving the current challenges to increase the efficiency and efficacy of the core production of care processes while simultaneously incorporating continuous innovation. The premise for the need for Knowledge Management is based on a paradigm shift in the environment where knowledge is now central to organizational performance (Dalkir, 2013; Drucker, 1993, 1999). Specifically, KM offers organizations many tools, techniques and strategies to apply to their existing production or care processes. Healthcare is information rich, with extremely large and complex data sets that need to be analysed. The collection of data permeates all areas of healthcare, and when coupled with the new trends in evidence-based medicine and electronic medical records systems, it is imperative that healthcare embraces the tools, technologies, strategies and processes of Knowledge Management if it is to fully realize the benefits from all these data assets (Wickramasinghe & Schaffer, 2010). |
