Abstract | Reflective practice is a critical workplace skill for accountants. It assists in enhancing learning, improving performance and advancing professional development. While there has been a growth of interest in reflective practice, there has not been a corresponding growth in understanding of what reflective practice encompasses, why it is important, and how it can be used. Employers have observed that accounting graduates often lack the competencies required for critical and deep reflection on their abilities and knowledge. Reflective practice is both challenging for educators to teach and for students to learn. Additionally, a constant question in education is how to foster learning that carries through to the workplace. This research outlines and evaluates the effectiveness of an approach to develop accounting students’ skills in reflective practice. The reflective practice journals of 31 students were analysed to ascertain their views concerning reflection at the start and end of the semester, the extent to which they gained confidence in reflective practice, and their commitment to use reflective practice in the future. The research explains the approach to fostering and assessing reflective practice and evaluates the effectiveness of the approach. This research should be of interest to educators in teaching and assessing reflective practice. |
