Rubrics – Know How to Use Them and How to Write Them

OVERVIEW OF WORKSHOP
The workshop will examine assessment rubrics for written assessment items in engineering. It has been shown through practice that a well written rubric enhances student learning. As such, marking of these rubrics should be put under the same scrutiny. Large first year courses typically require multiple markers. Due to this, there can be differences in how rubrics are interpreted if they are not well defined. A recent activity within a course with multiple markers has revealed the variability in academics assessment of rubrics. This workshop will begin to work on the justifications given for the assigned marks and creation of rubrics for open-ended questions.

ACTIVITIES
Participants will individually grade a ChatGPT generated assessment item with known flaws and mark it against a generic rubric that will be developed before the workshop. Engineering in society will be used as the theme to not bias one discipline. Once graded, the groups will discuss why they marked it as such. The group will then come together to discuss and create a rubric that has more depth. Once the rubric is created, another ChatGPT assessment will be graded to see if the improvements to the rubric were seen. ChatGPT is used for generating the assessment due to its inherent ability to create a standardised bias within the response.

TARGET AUDIENCE
Any participant is welcome to attend this workshop. Creating and delivering assessment items would enhance the participants ability to contribute but is not necessary.

OUTCOMES
As this is an ethical and controversial topic, a workshop is a fantastic mode for delivery. It is expected that this activity will allow for the dissemination of this exercise throughout institutions and begin to enhance academics marking acumen.
