Abstract | Impermeable urban features such as roads, footpaths and car parks all act as significant catchments for run-off water. These waters contain heavy metals and hydrocarbons that can leach into soils and ground water and/or are flushed out to the sea. It is believed that concrete pavements containing titanium dioxide (TiO2) have the ability to to remove certain volatile organic compounds from water and air and help reduce pollution in urban areas. This paper reviews the major developments of photocatalysts such as TiO2 in recent years and their incorporation into construction materials to aid in the degradation of pollutants. It provides an overview of the photo induced redox reaction and super-hydrophilic conversion of TiO2 for the degredation of organic pollutants. The fundamental research and applications of TiO2 in the field of construc-tion and building materials will be reviewed and discussed. The paper also introduces a new concept of incor-porating TiO2 into permeable concrete for the degradation of pollution. |
