Abstract | This chapter captures the voice of students who attend the Toowoomba Flexi School, a school for disengaged and disenfranchised youth. Similar to the approach taken by cultural anthropologists, the authors draw on their observations as well as face-to-face interviews with two Flexi School students, to provide an ethnographic understanding of the Flexi School student experience. The chapter provides insight into what the Flexi School means to its students – it documents how the Flexi School model allows individual students to experience success and achieve a sense of belonging in the community. Multiple aspects of the Flexi School experience are considered – including the peer groups, the teachers and staff, and the school work experience – and the overall student experience is contrasted with mainstream schooling experiences. Importantly, the chapter also captures student perspectives of the ongoing challenges at the Flexi School. The student narratives provide a standpoint from which one can consider how this alternative educational model, through its influence and support for its students, is helping to build community capacity. |
