Abstract

Daisy May Bates (1859–1951) was a social worker and anthropologist who lived with Aboriginal people for more than thirty years and wrote about their language and customs. Much of her extensive collection of information, papers, photograph and other materials were acquired by the National Library in 1941. The information presented in this publication is intended to provide an overview of work by Daisy M. Bates outlining games and amusements of Aboriginal peoples, especially from the south west region of Western Australia. It was collated and re-organised in an attempt to provide a clear and easy to access outline. To many people Daisy Bates is an unreliable source on many aspects of Aboriginal life and lore. The information presented provides an opportunity to evaluate her work. The task of presenting this work has been undertaken for the benefit of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples (particularly from the geographic areas focused on), researchers and others interested in information on this topic.
