Abstract | The coaching behaviors of non-elite tennis coaches, remains under-researched. This study considered the question of what teaching styles do junior development tennis coaches use during coaching sessions throughout the year through an extended observation of a junior tennis coach. Related to this was the question as to the alignment of the coaching behavior to the tenets of the sport coaching approach underlying the philosophy of sport in Australia, the Game Sense approach. The Spectrum of Teaching Styles was used as a framework to tag vision of the coach taking various practice sessions. Following the observational and video capture period the coach was interviewed to gain descriptive data about the coach perception of the instructional styles they believed they used during practice and comparison to the observed styles of the coaching sessions. This data was analyzed using an interpretive methodology. From the extended observational period of 18 hours with the coach, two landmark teaching styles of the Spectrum of Teaching Styles were observed in addition to variations (canopy designs) that approximated these landmark teaching styles. |
