Abstract | Coaching by Command is a teaching style focused on the coach and the subject matter they wish to teach or reinforce. The purpose of the commands is to direct the player’s attention to what the coach assesses to be the critical components of the movement behaviour and retention of the observed skill. Coaching by Command is characterised by an expectation of a predicted response or performance. It is often associated in the coaching literature as an ‘authoritative’ style of coaching. Coaching by Command might also be called precision practice, cued response, or imitation practice or explicit instruction. Coaching by Command may be particularly useful during what has been called skill establishment. Skill establishment refers to the structures or representations of movement on which other factors such as emotion, information perception, and attentional focus act. Feedback is a factor well considered in sport coaching research. In a Coaching by Command scenario, feedback provides guidance to a player learning. |
