Abstract | The defining characteristic of Player Initiated—Coach Supported style is that the player initiates and has responsibility for designing the learning experience. Pre-impact planning shifts to the player, including the coaching styles to be used. Player Initiated—Coach Supported episodes might also be thought of as the ‘consultant coach’. An area of sport where this often gets discussed in media is sport psychology and ‘mental skills training’ coaches. The Player—Initiated Style will usually be a series of episodes because if the skills could be learnt in one short episode, it is likely that the player has already had a high level of skill. A novice or beginner surfer could use the Player Initiated—Coach Supported style to learn how to surf. In the pre-impact set, Dennis has decided he wants to learn how to surf. During the impact set, Dennis begins by paddling, duck diving and turning in a calm body of water. |
