| Abstract | Play with Purpose is a game-based approach to physical education that emphasizes player-centered learning for game sense development. Play with Purpose prioritizes the use of game form play to develop students' movement ability and game understanding, thus aiming to foster a more educatively purposeful, contextually relevant, and, therefore, meaningful experience of learning to play. The model focuses on developing game sense (or ‘game intelligence’), which involves the ability to read the game, anticipate game situations, and make appropriate decisions in the context of play. This is achieved through a teacher's emphasis on the appropriate use of inquiry strategies (such as questioning for both recall and discovery) to challenge students to analyze game situations and solve game problems associated with moments of play. Play with Purpose encourages teachers to use formative assessment through observation, questioning, and the making of student thinking visible. This allows teachers to provide timely and relevant feedback to help students improve and enables teachers to differentiate through the Play with Purpose pathway for differing student challenge points or learner needs. In this chapter, we show the use of the Play with Purpose model to teach touch football to an tear 8 mixed-ability physical education class. |
