Description of Exhibition/Event | This article takes the form of a curatorial essay for a two-part contemporary art exhibition series titled: Down the Rabbit Hole: A Queensland College of Art, Griffith University and University of Southern Queensland Visual Art Research Project. Drawing upon Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, this essay aims to put forward the project’s interpretation and application of ‘creative curiosity’ within a critical studio research context. The findings have been that the role of practice-led research is poignant (within the context of this project) in adhering to the very notion of experiencing creative curiosity and effectively navigating audiences into visually narrated gallery spaces. In developing the concept of ‘creative curiosity’ the essay develops synergies across visual art, creative arts, education and literary research fields. The project’s contribution is also demonstrated through its critically engagement in studio research in a way that emphasises the intrinsic relationship and synergies between art universities and professional industries. Emphasising the importance of interweaving imaginative and non-fictional realms, the article discusses the idea of visual storytelling, particularly the use of non-linear narratives as a form of critical inquiry into contemporary art practices. The essay examines the metaphorical, symbolic and mythical facets within visual narratives and the way storytelling is used to blur boundaries between fact and fiction. This is then applied within the context of art history and the narrative inquiry research methodology from the field of education. |
