Description of Work | Drawing upon a rich European iconography of mythology, folklore and fairytales, Polish born Beata Batorowicz explores the weighted history of Polish/German experiences of WWII in her new body of work, Tales Within Historical spaces. In particular, the project is inspired by the little known history of a collection of children's stories, Fairy tales from Auschwitz (Bajki z Auschwitz) that were secretly written and illustrated by Polish prisoners in concentration camps for their children. These influences are interwoven with the artist's personal narratives as a way of engaging with cultural memory. This artist book was published on the occasion of 'Tales Within Historical Spaces' a solo visual art exhibition series launching at QUT Art Museum, Brisbane in September 2012 and traveling to the Wroclaw Art Academy, Poland in March 2013. This project was in partnership with QUT Art Museum, Wroclaw Art Academy, Poland and University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba. It received financial assistance from the Faculty of Arts, USQ ($3,000) and an Arts Queensland Visual Art Project Development Grant of $25,000. |
