Abstract

This chapter considers the construct of cocoon communities in relation to data from two research projects, one conducted in the US and the other in Australia, about migrant and itinerant farmworker communities in rural areas. Using the construct in conjunction with Gee's (2008) conceptualization of Discourses, Insiders, and Outsiders, and Freire and Macedo's (1987) notions of 'rewriting the world,' the chapter explains how these communities were able to experience a sense of belonging, negotiate multiple lifeworlds, and thereby 'survive' in contexts that were often unwelcoming to Outsider families.
